Why Did I Write This Book? – Discussing the motivation behind writing “Making Steel Sexy Again” and addressing key industry issues.

I’ve been in the steel industry for over a decade, starting at the bottom and working my way up to the C-suite. My journey through the various echelons of this industry has been nothing short of enlightening. I now run a company that helps steel distributors and suppliers automate their operations, and throughout my time in this industry, I’ve noticed several practices holding it back from reaching its full potential. However, these issues were rarely discussed openly. I wrote “Making Steel Sexy Again” to address these concerns and spark a conversation that could drive positive change in the industry.

A Collection of Observations

This book is not a polished literary masterpiece; rather, it’s a compilation of my notes, observations, and insights gathered from my extensive experience in the steel industry and interactions with other prominent industry leaders. The intent was never to provide a step-by-step guide but to offer a catalyst for thought-provoking conversations and encourage stakeholders to rethink their current practices.

Addressing Key Industry Issues

Embracing Technology
One of the main issues I’ve observed is the industry’s reluctance to embrace new technologies. Many mid-sized steel distributors and brokers are still using outdated software from the 1990s. These systems are not only inefficient but also pose significant security risks. The hesitation to upgrade to modern technology hampers productivity and leaves the industry vulnerable to cyber threats.

Overcoming Gatekeeping
Gatekeeping is another significant barrier in the steel industry. The old-timers and established players often block the entry of new, innovative ideas and individuals. This gatekeeping stifles creativity and prevents the industry from evolving. By highlighting this issue, I hope to encourage a more inclusive approach that welcomes fresh perspectives and ideas.

The Need for Sustainability
Sustainability is crucial for the future of the steel industry. Steel has the potential to lead us towards a more sustainable future, but only if we adopt environmentally friendly practices and technologies. The book discusses various ways the industry can reduce its environmental impact and contribute to global sustainability efforts.

A Personal Journey

Writing this book was also a personal journey for me. As an immigrant who moved to North America with just $3200, my early days were filled with challenges. I worked in a factory making window frames before getting a data entry job at a steel service center. My ability to complete tasks quickly earned me recognition and promotions, eventually leading to a CIO position. These experiences shaped my understanding of the industry and reinforced my belief in the need for technological advancement.

Starting EOXS

In 2019, after nearly a decade in the steel industry, I was convinced that it needed a technological overhaul. This conviction motivated me to start EOXS, a company dedicated to helping steel distributors and suppliers automate their operations. Our mission is to bring the steel industry into the modern age, improving efficiency, security, and sustainability.
“Making Steel Sexy Again” is my attempt to start a conversation about the future of the steel industry. By addressing key issues such as the need for technological adoption, overcoming gatekeeping, and embracing sustainability, I hope to inspire stakeholders to take action and drive positive change. This book is a call to innovate, adapt, and ensure that the steel industry remains strong and competitive in the years to come.
