What would the world look like without an ERP system?

For many years, businesses have used enterprise resource planning ERP software to organise and manage their various divisions, business units, and procedures. Even though the word ERP was first used formally in the 1990s, its roots may be found as far back as the mainframe-driven accounting systems of the 1970s and even the primitive by modern standards counting machines of the 1940s.

Instead, companies would probably find themselves overspending on essential supply chain operations like inventory control and freight transportation.

Let’s go back to our hapless consignment manager who is having trouble meeting client demands for timely delivery of goods and materials. Furthermore, the existing systems are so deficient that the consignment manager has no faith in the scheduled timescale they do have. There is no ERP system to reliably report when new goods will be delivered.

The consignment manager decides to consistently overstock inventory rather than run the risk of irritating and possibly losing clients as they wait for delayed shipments. Customers are satisfied, and products are constantly available. But because it locks up the company’s capital in excess inventory, this ineffective approach to inventory management has a significant negative impact on the business’s bottom line.

Stakeholders may strive to avoid delays in another area of the supply chain by speeding up freight shipping. The lack of an ERP system that can smoothly coordinate activities from one end of the supply chain to the other causes business units to lag behind and take extraordinary measures to limit the consequences. Again, paying more for faster shipment benefits the customer experience, but it undoubtedly lowers the company’s profitability.
