What is Tempering?

Tempering is a heat treatment process applied to hardened metals, such as steel, to achieve specific mechanical properties. It involves heating the metal to a precise temperature below its critical point and then cooling it in a controlled manner. This process reduces the hardness of the metal while increasing its toughness and ductility.

How Tempering Works

During tempering:

Temperature Control: The metal is heated to a temperature range typically between 400°C to 700°C, depending on the type of metal and desired properties.
Hold Time: The metal is held at this temperature for a specific duration, allowing for the desired structural changes to occur.
Cooling: The metal is then cooled, often in still air or through controlled methods like quenching in oil or water.
